There is a lot of sexism and gender inequality in the gaming industry, especially in the way that women are treated in voice chats. Women are often spoken down to or even sexualised because of their gender; this is particularly apparent in online competitive games.
This project aims to show young male gamers the problem with how they speak to and treat women when playing video games. Bullying women because of their gender and related stereotypes is wrong and has a negative emotional impact on them and their mental well-being.
This campaign endeavours to change the minds of young male gamers using emotion and humour, creating a more inclusive and fun experience for female gamers. The positive impact on the gaming community will also inspire a less sexualised representation of female characters in video games.
Campaign elements
The main component of this project is a short animation that presents a humorous but emotive story. This will be used alongside a social media campaign and other materials like a comic book to help promote the topic and bring the negative treatment of women in online video games to light.
Typography
As part of the campaign, I designed a unique monospace typeface that resembles fonts used in older retro games. It embodies the values of fairness, equality, and respect through its equal spacing and line widths, this serves as a representation of the campaign’s mission to promote positive interactions in online gaming communities. Additionally, I created a type specimen book to present my typeface and to demonstrate its effectiveness when put into practice.
